games, stories, and nostalgia

Recently, a former colleague from a previous job posted a link to an article he wrote about a game called Emily is Away. It was an excellent read, and the game sounded really interesting, so I played through it- flashes of previous AIM conversations with friends, waves of nostalgia, and funny freshman year high school feelings hit me. Funny enough, that same day, I was reading through old 2008-09ish blog posts of my senior year in high school, and marveled at how time had passed and the kind of person I was back then.

I tried explaining this game to the BF, and realized how difficult and weird it was to try to convey why this unusual game was so cool to me – the game’s emotional impact seems to target such a specific audience from a specific time period. How interesting it is when teenage moments and dated technology combine to create such memorable experiences!

Whenever I have discussions with friends or other games about my favorite part of a video game, it usually comes down to: graphics, story, mechanics. Story and narrative have always been the most appealing and important aspects of a game for me, and its influenced my decisions and preferred genres when picking up and playing games.

I haven’t been playing many games recently, because dance and work have taken a lot of my free time… But I felt inspired to explore story/narrative driven games whenever I can lately, including revisiting one of my favorite Steam titles, The Stanley Parable. (The Stanley Parable inspired my undergrad senior art show, which you can read more about here!)

My list of current game interests and playthroughs are:

  • Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain
  • Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty
  • Life is Strange
  • The Stanley Parable
  • Emily is Away
  • Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald
  • The Beginner’s Guide

Anyway, I thought I should be inspired to write and post about personal stuff more often, maybe add something like a current video game, music or movie list… since the bf actively enjoys reading my blog lately?!

Have you heard or played any of the mentioned games? What do you think?
